History of Liverpool Football Shirt Colors

In the Days of Blue

In 1892, the Liverpool football club wore blue. Before the club was formed, a fight between the directors of the Everton FC and the owner of the field, Houlding, broke out over higher rents. Houlding then formed what is now the Liverpool football club. The blue shirts were left over from the Everton club, which the new club used for four years.

Municipal Colors

Red came into the club only four short years later in 1896, when they changed the colors to the municipal colors of red and white. 1901 saw them add the liver bird emblem to the shirts, which was a bold move, but seemed to work. In only one season, the team earned a promotion to the second league, helping them win the championship. Successive wins earned another promotion to the first Division.

A New Crest

Beginning with the 1950-51 season, the team began its downward decline, and in the 1954-55 season, they were downgraded to second division. The next season saw the crest redesigned, used until 1969. Does changing an emblem really help turn the tide of losses? No one can be sure, but in 1959, Bill Shankly was appointed as club manager. He shook up the very core of the team and transformed them into winners. They won back their standing in the division, won the FA cup for the first time, and became division champions once again.

All Red

One day in 1965, Bill decided that the team needed to adopt an all red uniform. Before this, only the shirt was red, but the shorts were white. He thought that if the shorts were red as well, they would be an aggressive fighting machine and become the great team he knew them to be. The next season, the team adopted this uniform color, and it has stuck ever since.

Emblem Design Change

Again, the emblem on the shirts change. Before 1969, the emblem had a white background with a red bird. Now, the emblem changed to a white bird with no background. This was more “modern” and it stuck for seven years, until they decided to change it to a gold bird. Each and every time the shirt, or uniform, changed colors or designs, the team had some great successes. In 1973, the team won their first ever UEFA cup.

Sponsorship

1985 saw major sponsorship, which is reflected on Liverpool football shirts. They, of course, were sponsored before this time, but this did not show up on the shirts. When Adidas took over as sponsor, the name showed up on the football shirts. After this time, the uniform design changed every two years or so, making the shirts as unique as the team.

Coincidence?

The Liverpool football club has seen many ups and downs over the past century, but through it all, they have steadily risen in the ranks to become a very powerful force to reckon with. Did the color and design changes really help them win, or is this mere coincidence? You decide.
